SBC Messengers Sever Ties With Texas Church Over 'Gay' Members

It took messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting June 23 only 30 seconds to sever a 125-year relationship with a prominent Texas congregation because of the church's perceived toleration of gay members.

Voting in the opening session of their annual meeting in Louisville, the messengers chose overwhelmingly to dismiss Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth. They did so on a recommendation the convention's Executive Committee approved, without dissent, the day before.

Texas Supreme Court Rules Unanimously in Favor of Prison Ministry

The Texas Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favor of a ministry to former prison inmates Friday, determining that zoning regulations passed by the city of Sinton to oust the ministry from town violates the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Alliance Defense Fund ally Liberty Legal Institute represented the ministry in the case. ADF provided funding assistance for the appeal to the high court.

School 'Sexual Orientation / Gender Identity' Bill Passes House Vote

A bill to include "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" in a school bullying bill has passed the North Carolina House by a vote of 59 to 57 and will be on the calendar for a final vote on Tuesday, June 23. House Speaker Joe Hackney (D-Orange) took a personal interest in SB526-School Violence Prevention Act, sponsored by Sen. Julia Boseman (D-New Hanover), as he conferred with a legislative aid on the dias numerous times during the debate and prior to the vote on the bill. An earlier amendment by Rep. Jonathan Rhyne (R-Linclon) to send the bill back to the House Education Committee failed by a vote of 57 to 59.
